Crunchy is not for hair!

December 9, 2010

Today’s post is about avoiding the 80’s super-crunchy top ramen noodle-esque hair.  Why? Because it hurts my feelings to see what could be beautiful bouncy coils of curly cuteness turn into a rat’s nest.  So, how many times have you curly cuties reached for the mousse or gel to tame your tresses? Don’t answer, I already know.  Well, the solution to your problem starts as soon as your shower is complete.  I will give you a few simple rules to follow that will change your life …forever. Ready? O.K.

1.  Start with a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner. The one thing that curly hair tends to lack is moisture because the natural oils from your scalp take forever to get down to the hair shaft and once the hair dries, it dries with no oils and turns into a dry frizzy mess.  After shampooing you want to add conditioner to your hair (concentrate on the ends) and comb through with a wide toothed comb.  This helps separate the hair while evenly distributing the product. So starting with products that are made to add moisture to all of your hair is the first rule.

2. While your hair is still soaking wet, you want to wring out your hair with your hands while still in the shower.  Add your preferred product for curly hair.  The best way to do it is to start off with a little bit of product so you don’t over saturate the hair. Add more as needed.

3. The second rule is really really important kids…so pay attention. NEVER EVER EVER rub your hair dry: this will break and damage your hair and cause frizzyness.  Let your hair air dry or blow-dry with a diffuser. The less you touch your hair the better it will look.

4. Once the hair has completely dried use a gloss serum to soften the curls.  Take a small amount and lightly scrunch your curls. This will add shine and keep the curl product from creating stiffness in your hair.

5. NEVER EVER EVER run your fingers through your hair – it will cause your locks to frizz.
